John, in your question, which aspect of a speech makes the biggest impact on the audience – verbal, visual or content – I’d have to go with all three.
Normally, as you mentioned, speakers know their material so well, that they often rush through it, leaving the audience behind, not giving us an opportunity to visualize the scene. As for content? Well, if they aren’t good at painting the picture and giving details, they have lost me. Visual on the other hand, if not supported by the other two, will be a short lived impact. However when accompanied by great content, and riveting vocal variety, that keeps me locked in.
