I have to footnote this post by saying that when I was checking the background to this quote, I also saw several references attributing it to James Russell Lowell. I could not come to a definitive conclusion. Lowell lived long before Smith, so if he said it, he said it first. But there is no question that Smith also said it, and I would like to have more quotes from women.
I too have been trying to find the background on this quote. There is a similar quote in something called “The Chaplain” written in 1954, “Always begin somewhere. You can’t build a reputation on what you are going to do.” It says its from Thule Tidings. But I have no idea what that is.
