Content or delivery? This is one of the oldest and most frequently asked questions in public speaking: What’s more important—what you say, or how you say it?
In truth, both are essential. Content is the foundation of your message. It’s what gives your speech structure, purpose and value. Without good content, all the style in the world is just fluff. On the other hand, delivery is what brings that content to life. It’s what makes people sit up, lean in and remember what you said long after you’ve finished speaking.
In this short video (just over a minute), I share my perspective on this classic debate. While I do believe that content edges out delivery in terms of importance, the two are inseparable in practice. You can’t deliver a great message poorly and expect it to land; nor can you deliver empty content with flair and expect it to inspire.
This question often comes up in my workshops and coaching sessions, and it’s always a good reminder that preparation and performance go hand in hand.
