  1. Stories are the way to reinforce your points.

    They must be personal stories, and preferably your own.

    Too many, like Thomas Edison’s 10,000 tries to invent the light bulb, are told over and over. I heard that same story twice one day from back-to-back speakers!

    Personal Stories Rule!

      Thanks, Fred. Indeed, personal stories are the best. If they are not personal (and they do not always have to be) then I agree that one should avoid the “well worn path” of well known stories and try to find stories about people who are not well known, but whose stories reinforce the point being made.

      Thanks for the comment, Peter. Aristotle said that all good speeches are built on three pillars: logic (logos); ethos (credibility); and pathos (emotion). Too often these days, speakers leave out the pathos. As a result, they don’t make the best connection with their audiences. One of the best and easiest ways to create that connection is through stories.
